The legislature will meet on Tuesday, March 23rd for Day 28 of the session. Crossover Day is Thursday, March 30th. We’re going to be in for a busy week.

Legislative leaders announce plans to form tax reform committee

Legislative leaders, including Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, Speaker David Ralston, House Majority Leader Jerry Keen and Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers, announced plans to create the Special Council on Tax Reform and Fairness for Georgians (HB 1405), which could lead to a substantial overhaul of the state’s tax system.

Interesting rumor of the day

One of the more interesting rumors I’ve heard from the capitol this year is that leaders may be considering cutting the session short, perhaps at 33 days or so, leaving time to come back later on and address budget issues that may arise for FY 2011. This was an idea floated last year as well. [...]

While reading through Twitter this morning, I read that the proposed day for Sine Die is Monday, April 19th. I’m not necessarily doubting that, but Sine Die has come on Friday during the last few sessions. It does seem awkward for a Monday.

House Committee Passes Resolution Against Obama “Czars”

Tuesday, the House State Planning & Community Affairs Committee reported out a resolution that says the General Assembly nor the people of Georgia “consider themselves bound to comply with the orders of any presidentially appointed czar.”
House Resolution 1146 is sponsored by two candidates for Congress; state Representatives Clay Cox and Bobby Reese.
