House Republican leaders pulled H.R. 1, their centerpiece legislation aimed at capping property taxes. They didn’t have the 120 votes for the mandatory two-thirds approval.
One reason for falling short: Republicans lost John Sherman, president of the Fulton County Taxpayers Foundation.

HB 143 passed the House this morning by a vote of 117 to 55 (vote information will not be available until tomorrow), so it did have some Democrats behind it. It will fully fund Homeowners Tax Relief Grants for 2009, but future grants will be subject to a surplus in state revenues.
