About time. I like electronic voting, but an audit trail is a must. A lot of challenges are for ‘undervotes’ where the number of votes in a particular race are less than the number of ballots. I bypass uncontested elections (that ought to tell us something in itself), and in a race where none of the candidates appeals to my beliefs I’ll do the same. An undervote is really a vote for ‘none of the above’, and is legitimate.

Regarding the audit trail, each should also have a digital hash of the votes and other information (voterID, name, voting booth, date/time etc). This can be used to verify that the printed votes/information matches the voters intent (per their review of the paper ballot) and to prevent ballot stuffing.
